According to research, there is no definite record of the origin of the Lancashire Heeler. However, it is believed that it was likely derived from a type of Welsh corgi. It is said that the dog was used to drive cattle to the northwest of England, which is where the breed was influenced by a native small black and tan terrier type dog. This produced a general purpose farm dog that also offered the abilities of cattle heeling and ratting. This breed was also known as the "Ormskirk Terrier." While quite popular at the time when people needed cattle dogs, the number of Lancashire Heelers declined dramatically when people no longer depended on dogs to herd, almost to the point of extinction.
