The existence of the Cesky Terrier is credited to a geneticist and breeder from the Czech Republic named Frantisek Horak. It is said that this fairly new breed resulted from a mix of other terrier breeds, likely including the Scottish and Sealyham terriers, and perhaps others such as the Dandie Dinmont. Some breeders in the 1980s thought the Cesky had deviated from the standard created by Horak, and the breeders started crossing again with the Sealyham terrier. It is said that the Cesky was originally bred to be a hunting dog that would track rats and fox to their dens, and Horak wanted to create a breed that features a more narrow head and chest in order to allow the dog to follow the vermin into the burrow.
