By most accounts, it is believed that the Azawakh breed came from the Sahel region of Africa, and it was bred by Tuareg nomads in countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. It is thought that the dog was used in guarding and hunting capacities, as well as for companionship. This breed is exceptionally good at hunting hare and gazelle, because it can run at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. It is said that the Azawakh protects its family in places like Mali by sleeping on the roof of the home, keeping watch for predators such as hyenas. If a predator approaches, the dogs in the area create a pack that effectively chases it away or even kills it...... Find out more about this dog breed.
