We purchased a new puppy on the weekend - a beautiful 6week old Labrador retriver.

I have noticed that when he starts to run, he 'bunny hops' (after first running normally for a few steps).

I am worried about HD, and although I know that cannot be diagnosed for several months, is this a possible early sign? Or do all puppies do the bunny hop when they are excited?

What is the difference between a 'bunny hop' and a normal run for a dog, where the two front feet move together, and the two back feet move together?

Thanks in advance!
Wayne

We took Hailey today to be CGC tested and she did awesome. She was a bit anxious when we first arrived because of all the dogs and smells but she got into her groove and did fantastic. She got a CGC ribbon and her paperwork so I can send in for the official certificate, which is totally going on the wall (at least for a little awhile). :D

Sarge was adopted last January. I've been wanting to go visit him for a long time. I remember the day we left him with his new family. I cried for hours even though he got the best family ever. Some may remember him. He was a black lab mix who was 7 years old. He was scheduled to be pts the day after I picked him up. I begged two different rescues to let me foster him through them. Everyone thought he was too old. It only took 6 weeks and his new forever family found him. They love him deeply. Sarge gets to go farming with his Dad and ride around in a combine. Then he gets to come home and sleep with the two little boys every night. I can not wait to see him again. I get tears threatening just thinking about it. I think I'm going to have to sneak out of work a little early tomorrow. My camera is all charged and ready to go. :)

I know that nipping is a stage every pup goes thru and I know that you have to curb it early. Wahi was maybe 6 months (vet's guess, based on teeth) when I got her 2 months ago and she's generally very well mannered but absolutely still a puppy.

I've been teaching Wahi commands and tricks (including things like shake and high five) and the latest is for her to "kiss" on command. About a week ago, we were working on "kiss" - I want her to lick/touch her nose to my cheek on command - and when she put her face against mine, her mouth was open. Her mouth us SO big that it meant that her bottom teeth touched my skin right under my jaw (about an inch and a half from my ear, along the jawline). I figured she'd just gotten confused and wasnt actually trying to bite/nip my face.

Tonight Ariki was playing with a toy so I decided to work with Wahi on "kiss". When I pointed to my cheek and said "kiss" she acted like she was trying to nibble my chin. I said "NO" firmly and then tried to redirect (had her sit and refocus) and she did a "kiss" exactly the right way. Lots of praise and treats.

Then the next time, she came at the bottom part of my face with her mouth open and head on the side - exactly the same way she grabs Ariki when they're playing biteyface. I quickly said NO and took hold of her muzzle and held it closed for a minute.

Is she trying to play biteyface with me? Does this sound crazy? Should I give up on teaching kiss and just teach her not to lick humans at all? Thanks all! -Em

From a late-19th century series called The Five Little Peppers through to 2007's How To Steal a Dog, the list captures over 100 years of poverty-level slice of life—what we might call the Plight of the Raggedy Children.

"If publishing history repeats itself," Slate writes, "the financial crisis of 2008 will probably produce a new crop of poverty lit for kids." We agree, and below we offer some ideas for you opportunistic writers out there.

Finger Food
A poor small town banks its future on a severed fingertip that young Elba Franklin finds in a can of beans. These modern day "stationary gypsies" have wild adventures with the law, usually involving being accused of loitering at the nearby Jack-in-the-Box, and they spend their nights sneaking through the abandoned big box store and pretending to sell each other cheap electronics and household goods. When a strange young man shows up with his unhappy, hostile parents, Sara sees a kindred spirit who might be the one to help her co-sign on a by-the-week apartment. Depressing and pathos-riddled, yes, but don't you remember those S.E. Hinton books?

Mommy's Dollhouses
Five-year-old Gertie Prentice loves going to work with her mommy. Her mommy is a cleaner—she goes into recently-foreclosed houses and makes them look good as new so they can be put back on the market, and she sneaks Gertie in with her because daycare is too expensive. Gertie goes through the forgotten toys and left-behind dishware in each house and makes up fantasies about the people who used to live there, and she wonders why the people would leave such nice houses behind. (This could be a tie-in to the YA novel above, if you're a smart publisher.)

"Mom, What's a Credit Default Swap?" [Slate]
(Images: Finger Food, Madamoiselle Green; Rich on Paper, labasta, Getty Images; Luv in SuvTown, stephentrepreneur; Mommy's Doll Houses, lumaxart, Todd Baker << technowannabe)

And why not? I saw them all the time.

The primary-care veterinarian who coordinated all the care. The surgeon who tried a last-ditch effort to buy some time from the cancer that was killing my dog. The integrative care veterinarian who was helping to keep him functioning with acupuncture, water therapy and herbs.

Together, we bought Ben an extra nine months of high-quality time, and when my old guy no longer had a life of comfort, we all said good-bye.

Sympathy cards and thank-you notes were exchanged, and life went on. It was a familiar cycle, one I’d been through with Andy before Ben, and others before Andy.

I continued to see our primary care veterinarian for all that important preventive medicine, but everyone was healthy — not that I’m complaining, mind you! — so the visits were short, with no drama or emotion. The surgeon pulled Heather’s spleen three years ago after we saw a tumor on the ultrasound, but even that wasn’t much of a deal: The report came back benign, Heather healed quickly and that was that.

My primary care veterinarian’s oldest graduated from college, my surgeon retired half-way and my integrative care veterinarian started doing more teaching than practicing. And I didn’t know much if any of this, since I wasn’t around, didn’t need to be around, what with all the pets being relatively young and healthy.

So why do I know all this now? Because I have old dogs again.

Isn’t it remarkable how close you become to your veterinarians when your pet has a health crisis or you’re managing the eventual decline of old age and then saying good-bye? And then, you don’t see them as much, these wonderful people (and their staff!) who took your phone calls, answered your questions, shared your tears?

Until the cycle starts again, that is.

In the last couple of months, I have talked to our primary-care veterinarian on his cell phone (he was at a wedding reception), and resumed my first-name relationship with his lead tech, and with the practice radiologist and internist. And mostly, I’ve picked up again with the integrative-care veterinarian, again meeting for lunch and hearing about her life.

I expect the relationships to get more intense as Heather declines, and then to ease off again after she passes — a not imminent prospect, thank heavens — until the next time, as we all resume our busy professional and personal lives.

These people I adore, and they have been with me for so long and through so much. Why is it that we can’t or choose not to maintain our close connection between crises? Is it just too much for us all?

Pet owners will find it worthwhile to keep alert to the activities planned for their area. Each veterinary nurse taking part decides on an activity for the week, and that could include a sponsored dog wash or rabbit groom, or even a free nurse clinic for the day.

Celebrity Dog Art Debuts

If you'll be in New York City this month, don't miss the 30 life-size, fiberglass dogs on display...all painted by celebrities. What's everyone's feelings about doggy daycare?

This place we're taking him keeps the dogs separated in groups based on temperament, age and size. They also do boarding. We didn't take our other lab to daycare & we never boarded him and we always regretted not getting him used to being boarded. We always had family and friends who jumped at the chance to keep him overnight so we never had to. And even now, that's still the case with Cooper. But Cooper could use some time with other dogs to help him socialize too so that's the thought behind it. He wouldn't go to daycare every day or even every week (we can't afford that!) but when our work schedules are such that we can't get home to let him out a couple of times during the day to potty he could have a fun place to go that would get him that socialization and potty breaks.

Like I said, he wouldn't even go once a week most of the time but only when needed. But somehow I feel a tad bit guilty. As if I'm shirking my duties as a pet owner. Now if he gets there & loves it I'll feel less bad. I guess if he doesn't like it we don't have to take him back.

Our neighbors have 2 dogs that Cooper likes to play with but when we call & ask if they can play we wonder if they're just being nice or if they really like having Cooper there to play. We've invited them over to play in our yard but so far it's just been us taking him over there. They say they don't mind & in fact, if they see us outside sometimes they'll say "hey bring Cooper over later if you want". Of course we "want". One of their dogs is a lab they got from a rescue place for Hurricane Katrina. He's 90+ pound lovable gentle giant that Cooper adores. And certainly he puts Cooper in his place -- no nipping. And for that we love him. I always take biscuits over for both dogs though it's obvious they get plenty of that already! LOL When Cooper's done playing at that neighbors he's a whooped puppy -- they run and run and run and play and play and play. Cooper LOVES it.

So I know he likes to play with other dogs. I'm hoping daycare is something he will enjoy.

Here’s a great story about a study done in Australia showing kids with dogs were in better shape than those without.

As experts grapple with Australia’s escalating childhood obesity epidemic, new research has found owning a pet could keep children slim and healthy.

A Deakin University study found that young children who own a dog are less likely to be overweight or obese compared with those who do not have one in the family home.

The study of more than 1100 children aged five to 12 found they were in much better shape if they had a dog, even if they did not walk it regularly.

Head researcher, Associate Professor Jo Salmon, said the findings suggest even incidental play with the dog helped children keep the weight off. She said physical activity was the key to maintaining a healthy weight and the results were likely to be the same if children owned other pets such as cats or rabbits.

I would think this would apply to anyone, young and old, who has a dog. I know it gets Lisa and I to the park everyday, even when we don’t feel like it.

“For parents who are trying to get their kids off the computer and switching off the TV and getting out and playing, having a pet might be a really good strategy for doing that,” Professor Salmon said. “Social support for physical activity is vital, so this research suggests the extended family network - not just parents and siblings but also dogs and pets - is important for children’s health and their physical activity.”

I have literally had to stick my fingers down her throat and pull them out! I know it happens because she wants to swallow before things are chewed, so I just watch her like a hawk.

What do you do in this situation?

I have a question as well.
How do you find a breeder on the AKC website?
I'm having a hard time finding my new pup's breeder
I have there names and his parents names and there serial names and everything else but I can't find it on the akc.

So I was wondering could they some how not be registered?
