The Hartz Mountain Corporation has voluntarily recalled a specific lot of its Hartz chicken-basted rawhide chips for dogs due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

The company announced the recall Friday, saying the two-pound plastic bags of chips with lot code JC23282, UPC number 3270096463 were distributed to a national retail customer it did not identify.

Hartz said the normal testing it conducts through an independent outside laboratory did not detect the presence of Salmonella in any of its rawhide products, but sample testing conducted by another laboratory did indicate the presence of the bacteria in a single bag of the chicken-basted rawhide chips.

Here’s the rest.

On October 2nd I posted, Healthy Autumn Brownie Recipe, given to us from The Honest Kitchen.

Because I put it on the bottom of the article, some Dogsters missed that along with the recipe we are also having a fun giveaway.

The Honest Kitchen has generously donated some of their homemade dog treats to give away. Besides being all natural they have great names; Nuzzles, Pecks, Ice Pups, and Smooches.

We’re going to be giving one of each kind away, a total of four prizes. To enter use one of the treat names in a funny sentence, it doesn’t have to make sense. As an example, “I give my dog Smooches.” Leave your comment, in the comment section, and I will choose the winners on Thursday, October 9th based on the funniest or silliest answers.

To enter, go to the original posting and leave your comment in the comment section. Good luck!

The Honest Kitchen, based out of San Diego, is a natural pet food company. They’re a company that loves what they do and take pride in preparing fresh, healthy products for your best friend.

“We believe our pets deserve the same quality food that we’d choose for ourselves. That’s why all our recipes are made with 100% human-grade ingredients that you’d recognize from your own kitchen.

Our recipes are prepared with care and uncompromising attention to detail, so you can serve them with confidence.”

Lucy Postins
Company Founder and Friend to Mosi & Willow

The other great thing about this company is that a percentage of their profits go towards animal-welfare causes. As if that wasn’t enough, they have a pet friendly office and are joined by up to seven co-dogs a day.

For all the Dogsters who are foodies, The Honest Kitchen has been nice enough to share one of their healthy and fun to make recipes. You and your pal can spend a fall afternoon whipping up a batch of yummy brownies. Although I would advise that the two legged member be in control of the oven.

Healthy Autumn Brownies
These rich but delectable brownie-style treats can be made with any one of our dehydrated raw foods for dogs, and make use of some of the fall’s healthiest vegetables and fruits. Squash may be substituted for sweet potatoes if desired.

Ingredients
2 Eggs
½ Cup of Cooked, Mashed Sweet Potato
½ Cup of cooked Parsnips, finely diced
3/4 Cup of Diced Ham
¼ Cup Grated Gruyere Cheese
¼ Cup of Dried Cranberries
4 Tbsp Applesauce
2 cups of Honest Kitchen Dehydrated Dog Food
1 ½ Cups Warm Meat Broth (low sodium, if commercial)
1 Small Pinch fresh or Dried Rosemary (optional)

What To Do:
Hydrate the food using the warm meat broth.

Crack the eggs into a bowl and whisk lightly. Mix in the applesauce, ham and cheese.

Mix the sweet potato or squash into the hydrated food, along with the parsnips & cranberries.

Add the egg mix to the Sweet Potato mix and combine thoroughly.

Spread in a thin layer onto a well greased baking sheet.
Grate a little extra cheese on top if desired and cook at 300 F for about 60 minutes or until the top is slightly dried and slightly crispy.

Cool thoroughly and cut into squares to serve.
For firmer treats, divide the mix into teaspoon sized drops and space evenly on a baking sheet, flattening gently with the spoon. Cook as above.

*Oatmeal and a little ground meat can be used as a substitute for the THK products.

The Honest Kitchen has generously donated some of their homemade dog treats to give away. Besides being all natural they have great names; Nuzzles, Pecks, Ice Pups, and Smooches.

I received a message about a potential danger concerning the “Real Ham Bone” made by Dynamic Pet Products.

I have not been able to find any recall of this product, or any information for that matter. Regardless, this is definitely something you’ll want to be aware of.

I would like to warn all dog lovers out there to be very careful about the dog treats that you give your dogs. Last week I bought a “Real Ham Bone” made by Dynamic Pet Products of Missouri from Walmart.

Here is what it looks like: . The label says it is made with “100% Food Grade Ingredients” and it isn’t made from China. I thought that meant that this would make a good treat for my dogs. Boy was I wrong.

Trace, my dog, enjoyed chewing on this bone. It did not splinter or anything, in fact there is quite a large piece of it still left. Then in the evening she started vomiting.

She spent the next day at a veterinarian’ s office where she was diagnosed with a blockage of the colon. That night she endured a 4 hour surgery at Brandon Veterinary Specialists where the vet picked out small round pellets of the bone, up to the size of about a b-b.

The next morning she was moved to Florida Veterinary Specialist critical care unit. Again in the evening she had another 2 hour surgery, because the blockage had caused poison in her body. She passed away at 4:30 the next afternoon.

Everyone who hears this horrible story immediately says “Well that sounds like a lawsuit to me”. That is what I thought also. Since then, I have learned that is not that easy to sue on behalf of a dog.

The lawyers say a dog is a possession just like a couch. So, so far, all I have been able to do is write a certified letter to Dynamic Pet Products of Missouri.

In it I requested my vet bills to be paid and their product to be relabeled or preferably removed from the shelf. I don’t know if I will get a response. If anyone else has any ideas about how I may address this issue, please let me know at djurgens12@aol. com.

In the memory of Trace, please pass this email on to all of the dog lovers that you know. This type of bone is sold in all of the stores under several different manufacturers names. I would assume they all may do the same thing. Even if they don’t splinter, they can cause a blockage.

I would like to pass on my condolences to Trace’s owner, and thank them for sharing this tragic story to help prevent it from happening again.

I don’t mean love them in a tail-wagging, ‘glad to see you’ kind of way. I mean love them in an obsessed-stalker kind of way. They stare out the window and bark when Jim or Jen come home from work. They race downstairs when they hear Mary Lou’s voice outside and throw themselves at the screen door in an attempt to get to her. When we go for walks, they first drag me to the neighbors’ doors, in the hope that they’ll be seen from the window and given chicken jerky or liver-flavored training treats.

So that’s what I wrote my column about this month. Turns out that my girls aren’t the only pets who “cheat” on their people. Oh, sure, there are some animals who stand aloof from all but their beloved person, but others are, well, let’s just say they have a flexible definition of loyalty. Here are some stories of pet love gone wrong–with tips on how to make your dog love you best (or at least pretend to).

They wanted me to try them out with Archie, Lydia, and Tequila. I have to admit though, I’ve tried some of them out in the past and they truly are some of my favorite pet products.

Here they are…

The FURminator - I did a review on this a few months back and I can tell you this is definitely one of my favorite pet products! It’s better than any brush I’ve ever used on my cat and dogs, and the best part is, they really enjoy being FURminated! I don’t know how she does it but my cat, Tequila, comes running if I just go near the darn thing, and even pushes the dogs away so she can get her FURminator time!

Gentle Leader - This head collar is a standard tool for a lot of trainers and people who want to teach their dogs to heel without jerking the dog’s neck. It puts light pressure on the dog’s muzzle and back of the neck and when used properly, it’s easier on the dog than a standard collar. I used it to teach Lydia to walk at my side and was really pleased with how it worked. Again…one of my favorite pet products.

Greenies Pill Pockets - Many pet sitters won’t try to pill cats without pill pockets! These are soft treats with a small pocket in them big enough for a pill to fit in, and makes for an easy way to get medication down an unwilling pet. It’s true some pets may find the medication in them and only eat the treat but for others, they’re such fun treats they’ll gulp them down before they have a chance to find the pill inside. I tried these out but to be honest, my guys are so easy to give pills to that I just use them as a treat after they get their meds.

N2N Poop Patrol - These bags are for that nasty job nobody really wants to do - pick up poop. and they come in gray, pink, or blue. They also come with a handy storage container that can easily clip on a belt or even your leash…it even has a safety reflector on it to help with visibility when walking at night. And although I don’t see it on the package, the information PetSmart sent with all of these products says the bags are made from biodegradable materials.

Nature’s Miracle Dander Remover & Body Deodorizer - This is a biodegradable enzyme formula that can be sprayed on your cat or dog to help cut down on pet odor and dander. The ingredients list includes water, Nature’s Enzymes, isopropyl alcohol, and natural citrus scent. My dogs aren’t all that smelly and don’t have a dander problem, but for pets who do this might be helpful…and for people who are allergic to their pet’s dander!

PetSmart bills these as some of their favorite things, but I’m curious to know what your favorite pet products are. Let’s hear it!

Some people have no idea that the body language that we display has a major impact on how well a dog will listen to us and obey our commands. Using the correct form of body language can also quickly stop your dog from displaying an improper behavior.

Let's use a very common example, such as the overexcited dog who likes to jump on every guest that comes to your door. We all go through this with our puppy or adult dog at some point in time. As soon as the guests arrive your dog is overwhelmed with happiness and excitement about who is at the door and whether or not they are going to play with him.

Do they have dog treats? What do they smell like? Do they want to play? How about I just jump all over them and see? This is exactly what your dog is thinking if we were to decipher his emotional behavior.

And meanwhile, you are giving every command possible to get your dog to stop being so excited and jumping on everyone. You try shouting but it only makes him more excited. You try giving harsh and loud "Off" commands but it's not working. Eventually, you are so stressed with yelling and trying to pull your dog off that it turns into one big chaotic party.

And yes, the term "party" is a great way to explain it because to your dog you are just joining in on the fun and excitement that he is feeling. Can you see now how your body language and the way you are communicating with her voice comes across to your dog? You are only adding to the situation as opposed to changing our dog's behavior.

Communicate better with your dog by using the following body language tips

In the above example of the overexcited dog who can't seem to stop jumping all over the house guests, you understand now that your body language and excitability only made your dog feel more enthused about what it is he was doing. Therefore, you must take a different approach to the situation, regardless of what action you are trying to communicate with your dog. Below are a few basic body language tips that you can use:

1. When you're angry at your puppy or adult dog, do not chase him around the house. You may be upset with them, but to your puppy, he thinks you're playing a game and he will run around forever.

2. When you give your dog a command, display a very bold and upright body position. Stand up, chest forward, and head back. Your dog will have more respect and a slight bit of intimidation, which can help with training him.

3. If your dog is extremely excited then do not add to the problem by getting feisty. Instead, move slowly and talk in a soothing tone of voice. Display the same behavior you wish him to use. Doing so will calm him down and it will be much easier to change his behavior.

Yummy Chummies Dog Treats

Yummy Chummies is a brand of dog treats produced by Arctic Paws, LLC, a company based in Anchorage, AK.

It's focus on the benefits of salmon, specifically the heart-healthy nutrients of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. The omegas are said to boost immunity, mobility, join, and skin, and for dogs, a nice shiny coat.

The company sent me a bag of their "Original" variety. They several other varieties, all based on salmon, but with other flavorings like Bacon and Chicken. Hmmm, bacon-flavored salmon?

So I gave some pieces to Max and Mia, and watched their reaction. Sure enough, they liked it.

Well, when it comes to giving your dogs some treats, it's really about satisfying yourself. I don't know too many dogs that would turn down a treat.

The photo above makes these pieces look like they're hard, like crackers. But they're not. They're chewy, but not necessarily soft as the package says. They're more like stiff fig-newtons.

The typically retail for about $4.99 per 4oz bag.

Visit Yummy Chummies online at...

http://www.yummychummies.com

Ingredients

Wild alaska salmon, wheat flour, vegetable glycerin, propionic acid, natural smoke flavor, citric acid, garlic, calcium carbonate, natural mixed tocopherols, and rosemary extract.

2007 Guinness & Rosie Barkalutions

Guinness and Rosie share with you their dreams of achievement from the bottom of their Canine-American doghearts for the coming year.

Guinness:

2007 will be the year I catch the big one…a duck, that is. Yep. Before I herd it back to the lake I’ll use my super puppy powers to crouch low, sneak up and snag him! I’m not sure what I plan to do with the duck once I have him; probably just ruffle his feathers and let him go. You know, most fowl have no sense of humor. Either way, it’s going to be fun for me!

Rosie:

I’ve got huge plans for this year; I’m going to grow up big and climb trees. Guinness can sniff and read his tree-mail all he wants and judging by the number of tree-mail accounts he has all over the place, I'd say he’s pretty pawpular. Nope, my interest is in tracking one of those snarky squirrels right up in to the tree itself! They're always running around stealing stuff and scrambling up out of reach. Now, I like my petrified frog and my nearly dead limping lizard; but my goal is to get a pet squirrel to chase around by the lakeside. Who knows? Maybe we could even have a squirrel tossing contest…those bushy tails have to be good for something!?

Together, we wish you tummy rubs every morning and a dog treat on your puppy pillow every night. May you enjoy the very best in 2007.

Party Animals

When Rosie and I hopped in the backseat for a ride, little did we know mommy was taking us to a big dog party! There were dogs everywhere and the only thing I could surmise is that they were here to see me because of my puppy super powers and to meet the Diva Roo in person. This kind of thing happens all the time.

We were busy greeting everyone with a nose to nose ‘hello’ when we discovered a unique benefit to partying with the big dogs; Rosie and I could cruise by being all cool and catch a sniff with nothing more than a casual turn of our snouts!

But, the best part was the dog treats...they were everywhere!
This week we had the four remaining teams continue on their quest to become the Greatest American Dog. The week’s theme was loyalty.

You’ll remember that at the end of last week, Galaxy had hurt herself. The good news is that Galaxy’s injury turned out to be nothing. The following morning she woke up and stopped limping. JD took her to the vet and they gave her a clean bill of health. Awesome news!

This week’s dog bone challenge was a competition where the dog was placed on a small tree stump and told to sit or stand while their owner stood on a tree stump about 20 feet away. The first dog to sit down or jump off was eliminated.

Teresa and Leroy won when Travis called Presley off the stump after sitting there for over 18 minutes. In the interview afterwards, Travis explained why he conceded by saying that the challenge was about loyalty. He knew Presley wasn’t comfortable but was being loyal by staying on the stump the whole time. So to show his loyalty to Presley he called him off the stump. Kudos to Travis for doing this.

The best in show challenge was simple. Each dog was placed in a circle with their owner 10 feet away. Each of the other dog owners then had a chance to entice the dog out of the circle.

Laurie and Andrew were first. Let me tell you, Andrew is one loyal dog! With Laurie peering at him, he just sat there as the other three owners jumped around.

Next were Teresa and Leroy. Leroy wanted to chase the ‘toys’ in a bad way. That boy loves to play! It took all of Teresa’s finger pointing, tilting of the head and the constant “ahh, ahh” to keep him in the circle, but she did.

Next up were JD and Galaxy. Galaxy, being the best trained dog on the show, handled the challenge without a problem.

Finally Travis and Presley were up to try their hand. Being the most excitable of all the contestants left, this challenge was clearly the most difficult for them. After staving off the advances of Teresa and Laurie, Presley just couldn’t help bolting towards JD when called. He failed the challenge. Or did he?

The judges had to decide who to let go. The rules would make this simple, no? If the dog leaves the circle, he failed and should therefore be expelled. Since only one dog failed to stay in the defined area, he’s the one to go. Well, not so fast my friends. The team expelled was Teresa and Leroy. Why? Because, according to the judges, when telling Leroy to stay, she did it in a most threatening way.

So the problem that has plagued the show throughout, reared it’s ugly head again tonight. Inconsistent judging.

But is it the judges fault? I don’t think so because nobody seems to know what is being judged. Not me, not you and not the judges.

Here’s what I mean. This week’s show was supposed to be about loyalty. Frankly, it was a just a big sit/stay challenge. That’s it. What’s loyal about forcing your dog to sit or stand uncomfortably on a stump? What’s loyal about forcing your dog to stay as he/she is enticed by food, toys and/or encouragement by others? Does it show discipline? Yes. Loyalty? Maybe.

So how do you show loyalty? Personally, I’d say if my dog Bo hangs loose by my grave for more than a week after my passing, that’s loyalty. Any less time than that, and I suspect that will be the case, then I’ll know he was just in it for the treats : )

As always, I enjoy reading all of your thoughts. Let her rip…

Happy NEW YEAR!!!

Happy New Year people!! Hope everyone had a great holiday and New Year. Did you all party down like I did? And just what did I DO to ring in the New Year you ask? Well...I stole a slurp of beer from Dad's bottle when he wasn't looking, pigged out on puppy treats, watched the big ball of lights drop with my humans, ran around the house barking my head off while Mom and Dad smooched and chewed up one of Mom's old slippers! Not a bad way to bring in 2007, if you ask me.

It produced a few cringe worthy moments, almost making me turn the channel. What can I say, I don’t deal with conflict very well. We’ll get to that shortly.

The dog bone challenge this week was an intelligence test; put some people food behind a wall and see how long it takes the contestants to figure out how to get at it.

It looked like Teresa and Leroy or JD and Galaxy were going to win with times of 15 seconds. Then whaddya know, Bill and Star came on the scene and totally destroyed that number, getting to the food in 8 seconds. Star knows what she likes, and she likes her people food!

Bill, reciprocating Teresa’s kind act of last week, gave her the dog bone suit and the leg up on this week’s Best in Show competition. People being nice to each other, we love to see that. Unfortunately, we weren’t going to see much more of it on this week’s show.

The Best in Show competition was focused on dog painting. Basically the contestants were given a blank canvas and they were tasked with creating a work of art that spoke to the relationship between the owner and their pup. The difficulty? Only the dog could paint the canvas.

All types of methods were crafted to let the inner Pawcaso’s (thanks Beth Joy) out. It ranged from stencils to sponges on feet and backs to peanut butter powered paint rollers. In the end some of the paintings were pretty good, albeit only if viewed through the prism of a six year old’s eyes. But hey, it’s canine’s painting!

So let’s talk about the controversy from last night. When Beth Joy was creating her masterpiece, she put Bella Starlet’s paws into a paint pan. Don’t worry, all paint was canine friendly. It was made apparent that Bella Starlet has issues with anyone touching her front paws and she made a yelping sound. This happened several times, prompting others to look over to see what was going on. From a distance it appeared the dog was being forced to do something it didn’t want to, but I leave that judgement up to Beth Joy who would know better than anyone if this was the case. There’s no doubt she loves Bella Starlet more than anything in the world.

Enter Laura and Preston. I don’t know why they were up against the clock when everyone else seemed to have been done, but their painting wasn’t very good. I forget what it was supposed to represent but it just looked like a few paint cans had been tipped over. Yup, Bo could have done that.

When Laura was pressed on why it was so bad by the judges, she indicated she only worked Preston up to his limit and wasn’t willing to push him past it…unlike others in the competition. Yikes! The judges asked who, and Laura backed the bus over Beth Joy.

Next thing you know, Travis pipes up and supports Beth Joy. Not the greatest move if you’re looking to have a relationship with the accuser. Then, while the judges were making their decision, a confrontation occurred between Beth Joy and Laura. This is the point I wanted to change the channel. This is not why I’m watch the show.

So in the end we had the bottom three…JD and Galaxy, Laurie and Andrew and Laura and Preston. Based on the paintings it wasn’t hard to see who to expel. Bye, bye Laura and Preston.

A couple of highlights from last night, at least for me:

- Star holding a pretzel in her mouth until Bill finished reading the ingredients on the package to make sure it was OK for her to eat it.

- There was a quick shot of Leroy on the bed sleeping with his tongue out. Gets me every time.

- Galaxy showing how good he is at catching frisbees and Presley showing how good he is at attacking doggie beds.

- The dogs with paint on their faces.

- Travis admitting he has commitment issues to the judges and then pushing his budding romance with Laura away by siding with Beth Joy.

It was nice to see a bit more dog action than what we’ve seen in the past. Hopefully they’ll concentrate on that more than the human issues going forward.

Hey, next week we get to see puppies in action!! Puppies on camera!!! Yeah, can’t wait.

I know you have opinions…let us hear ‘em.
