Calvin is now 12 weeks and doing well, aside from his new skill of snarling he is great!! I have found some great resources to help us with that. :brow: He can already sit and lay down, so we anticipate that puppy training will go well. I do hope to post more pcitures soon but he keeps us busy!! We love him to death and my son does not leave his side, a great companion!! I look forward to speaking with you all during the issues we have ahead!! :D

We are not breeders, and have no intention of being. No judgement against breeding, I just don't want to. This just seemed the best place for our questions.
We foster for a rescue group, and currently have five puppies, one litter of four 6-week-olds and one 9-week-old. The litter was rescued at two weeks old and hand fed by a volunteer until they were on solid food. Here's my questions:
1. At what age should we consider them available for adoption? We have adopters ready for the 9-week-old and one 6-week-old. However, none have had their boosters yet, and only the older puppy has had his first round of shots. We were thinking after 8 weeks (and full shots) for the younger puppies, but the adopter wants to pick her up after first round and accept responsibility for second round since she's been weaned. We're not going for it, but I wanted to get your advice.
2. Any tips for potty training five at once?
3. When are they old enough to begin crate training? Do you crate together or separately?
We've never had this many at once - usually just one puppy at a time and older puppies. The litter was a special circumstance, and we took the older since we had the others. I want to make sure these little guys - and girls - have the best start possible.

Acral Lick Granuloma - A Problem For Many Dogs
by Joseph M. Sabol

Dogs often develop hot spots where they lick and chew constantly. A hot spot like this on the front paw near the wrist or the outside rear leg can turn into an Acral (relating to limbs ) Lick Granuloma. The spot becomes red, irritated and an open sore. The licking and chewing becomes a compulsive behavior. Detecting Dog Bloat
by Ben Anton

Canine gastric dilatation, commonly referred to as bloat, is a fairly common and potentially fatal medical condition. Bloat occurs when gas accumulates in the dog's stomach and causes it to become overstretched. Bloat can also involve a twisting of the dog's stomach, known as volvulus, which leads to very high mortality rates. Volvulus has the

Dog Food: 5 Extraordinary Types of Commercial Dog Food You Might Want to Consider

Dog Training

Dog Food: 5 Extraordinary Types of Commercial Dog Food You Might Want to Consider
by Kelly Marshall

A few short years ago, feeding your dog was so much easier as compared to today's nutritional advice. I remember when my father's dog ate whatever the whole family would eat, including apple cobbler! In addition to table scraps, he also enjoyed eating commercial dog food. Dog Mange: How to Keep Your Dog From Itching
by Cristian Stan

If your dog has mange, you will know it right away. For starters, it would scratch a lot and become irritated. Your pet would also develop red rashes on its skin that would soon spread all over, if you don't take it to the vet right away. Mange is a major problem in dogs. If you suspect that your dog is suffering from

Four Weeks Old Today!!!!

The pups are four weeks old today. It's difficult to imagine where those weeks have gone: on one hand, seeming to take forever; on the other, just flying by.

Here's what the young pupmeisters are up to these days:

They're still nursing, but not nearly as frequently, nor as long. The pups are far more efficient, and Elsie's milk lets down stronger and faster now so it goes quickly (all of about two minutes). And, of course, Elsie is getting less amenable to the idea of the pups nursing now that they all have TEETH! The poor sweet Elsie girl...I think she's ready to be done with this:

If you read this week's posts, you know we've started them on gruel: a mixture of soaked-in-boiling-water-first-then-blended-puppy-food mixed with Esbilac (puppy milk replacement formula) cooled to just moderately warm (like the temperature of milk in a baby bottle). They absolutely love it and are quite ready for it. We'll gradually increase the consistency over the next ten until the pups get to point where they're handling dry puppy food (what we'll send them to their new homes on).

The pups are learning to lap from a water bowl (here are Mstrs. Green, Red, and Yellow trying it out below). After a few snout fulls (for the braver, jump-right-in types), they get the idea. The more cautious pups seem to lap without any snout-fulls at all (hmmm....is there a lesson in there somewhere?):

They're fine-tuning their vocalizations: figuring out what each means, trying each out in a more controlled way. Here's Mr. Red trying out the forlorn howl:

They're beginning to use a puppy litter box (yes, they make these especially for canines and puppy potty training now). This is our first time trying it, and it seems to be working well. They pups use it about half the time (without our actively training them to do so). Even if they only use it half the time, that's half the clean up for me and well worth the small expense (saves a TON on paper expense and laundry, too). Here are Mr. Red (foreground in box) and Mr. Green (behind Mr. Red) trying to use it simultaneously:

They still like to hide. I think it provides a sense of security for them. In the following three pictures, Miss Pink sleeps soundly underneath the lip of the litter box, Mr. Blue rests under the rails in the back of the whelping box, and Miss Sky slumbers along the whelping box side under the rail (like Mr. Blue):

They seem to enjoy the feeling of being boxed in (or at least having something over their heads). That bodes well for their crate training to come! :o)

And they still nap most of the time, of course. The following pictures are of Mr. White, who plopped down next to the water dispenser, and Mr. Lime, who plopped down on top of the pyramid toy, sleeping soundly about 30 seconds after they put their heads down. When these guys plop for a nap, they plop for a nap!

The pups continue to wrestle with and chew on each other, but it's not really in earnest yet (just wait!), nor is it well coordinated (they're still developing, after all). Then the new owners will be able to come visit the pups reqularly during the pups' last two weeks here.

Here's Mr. White pawing at and climbing on BFF Kath as she sits in the puppy play pen (yes, in addition to handling them, puppy socialization at this stage means getting on the floor and allowing the pups to climb all over you -- such hard work, I tell ya!):

Each pup, including Mr. Black, is developing right on schedule. At 28 days old now, they've just completed their first "awareness/identification" stage of development and now move into their second "awareness/identification" week.

This week we can expect to see more sophisticate play (less throwing themselves at and tripping over each other, and more controlled romping). We should also see more chasing (yup, we've actually seen a trot or two out of the more developed pups already!), dominance play, and "kill" games where they pin each other by the neck (this is all part of them identifying where they fall in the pecking order).

We'll be adding climbing toys, more movement toys (rolling balls), and more new surfaces for them to walk on. We'll also be taking them outdoors on the grass and decking later in the week.

For the first time in they're young lives, they'll also start spending short amounts of time 1:1 with us away from the litter. That's when we can really begin to see their personalities. We'll gradually increase the time away with each pup so that they learn independence and so that we can minimize (hopefully) their separation anxiety and increase their human bonding when the time comes for the puppies to go to their new homes.

Betcha never knew so much went into the proper socialization of a pup (most people don't, and then they wonder why they end up with a "problem" puppy)! I know I sure didn't before we started breeding, but the more we do now to prepare the pups for their lives with their new owners, the more likely it is that they'll find forever happy homes.

And that's the goal, isn't it? We raise them to fly, to reach their potentials, and to enrich the lives of those they love (and who love them).

Sounds a bit like human children, too, eh?

'Til next time,
Joan

Guide to Dog Difficulty Urinating - Treatment & Prevention Tips

Dog Training

Tough Love: Helping Your Dog Lose Weight
by Ben Anton

There are a number of different factors that can cause a dog to become overweight. Overindulgence on the part of the owner plays a large part in pet obesity. We all want our pets to be happy, and sometimes an extra handful of kibble does the trick. Certain breeds of dogs are also more likely to eat quickly and/or become

Dog behaviorist to visit Boonville, Ind. for two-day seminar (Evansville Courier & Press)

A dog behaviorist from Canada will visit the Tri-State this weekend to conduct a two-day dog training seminar in at the Warrick County 4-H Fairgrounds in Boonville, Ind.

She's very sweet, a little timid and fearful, and moves with quick movements back and forth. She hasn't gone in the house, so she's house-trained. But, she has no leash manners, doesn't know sit and she is constantly nibbling, sniffing, licking our hands, like she's expecting there to be food there. She seems to be terrified of loud sounds, motors etc. Everywhere she goes, she starts out with her head down, moving nervously, tail down also. Once she feels there is nothing to fear, she'll be fine and happy. Any new person she sees she will run to them, but, when she gets close, she'll lay flat on the ground in front of them, her tail wagging a little. When they talk to her and pet her, then she'll sit up, lick them and wag the tail harder.
This is basically her personality, in a nutshell. So, what's the best way to teach her, I don't want to do anything that will cause more fear and insecurities....but, I also don't want to be too gentle, causing her to hold on to those fears and insecurities.

Bringing a new cat, dog, or other pet into your life can be exciting and fun! And, when you adopt from a rescue or shelter, it can be especially rewarding knowing you’re giving that pet a second chance at life. What potential adopters need to know though, is that rescue groups and shelters normally have certain requirements a potential pet owner must meet in order to adopt a pet. Since they want to place the pets with the best possible homes, someone looking to adopt a pet should be ready to be screened…sometimes quite thoroughly.

The shelter or rescue group may ask if the pet will live indoors or out, what experience the person has with the type of pet they’re trying to adopt, if they can afford veterinary care, and other questions they feel are important to the health and well being of the pet. So, the more planning and research you do before adopting a pet, the better the experience will be for you and your new family member.

With that in mind, here are a few things to think about before you bring your new pet home. Being prepared may make the adoption process go more smoothly so you can bring your new pet home and start getting to know each other.

Health Care
One of the first trips you take with your new pet should be to your veterinarian. Chances are the people you adopted your cat, dog, or other pet from will have already had him checked out, but it’s a good idea to get him to your own vet for a thorough checkup.

It’s a good idea to have a veterinarian before you bring your new pet home. If you don’t have one though, check with family and friends to get their recommendations. The rescue group or shelter you adopt your pet from may also be able to give you a list of vets in your area. Once you choose a veterinarian, the initial visit with your pet will serve to establish a relationship with him or her so you don’t have to scramble to find one if your pet becomes ill. And if you’ve never had a pet before, this is a great time to talk with your new vet about general health issues.

Visit this website for more information on what to look for when you choose a veterinarian.

If you’d like to get an idea of the costs involved in caring for a pet, visit this website. You might want to consider buying health insurance for your pet as well. I’m a big advocate of it and have been extremely happy with Petplan Pet Insurance, but there are other pet insurance companies out there to choose from. Visit Pet Insurance Review to find out more.

Take a Pet First Aid Class
Knowing how to react in an emergency may save your pet’s life. The American Animal Hospital Association estimates that one in four more pets would survive an emergency if they were given first aid. Investing a little time in a pet first aid class will prepare you not only how to manage emergencies, but some classes (like Pet Tech) will teach you how to prevent some of the most common emergencies cat and dog owners face.

To find a pet first aid course in your area, check the Pet Tech website, the Red Cross, or even your veterinarian. If you’re in Austin, Texas you can take a Pet Tech class through Austin Pet First Aid.

Dog Training
Even if you adopt a dog that knows obedience commands, taking her through a basic obedience class can help you bond and learn from each other. If your new dog hasn’t had any training, taking her through a class will enable you to become a better dog owner, help her learn good manners, and will train you to train your dog.

If you have friends with well trained dogs, ask them if they know of a good trainer. You can also check with your veterinarian or do a search on the Association of Pet Dog Trainers website.

Pet Sitting and/or Dog Walking Services
If you travel and don’t think you’ll be taking your pet with you, a pet sitter can be a great way to keep your pet comfortable at home. If you work long hours and need someone to take your dog out for a mid-day potty break or walk, a dog walker can be very important to you and your pet. If your dog gets some attention during the day, he will be less likely to become bored, which can lead to destructive behavior.

Talk to some pet sitters before you bring your new dog or cat home. Find out what services they offer, if they care for the type of pet you’re adopting, what they charge, etc. If you’re adopting a dog ask if they can help with potty training and mid-day visits. Having someone visit during the day while you’re at work can be very important in getting your dog acclimated to his new home and routine.

To find a professional pet sitter check with your friends or your veterinarian. You can also search the PetsitUSA.com website, search online, or look in the yellow pages.

Pet Accommodations - Indoors or Out
Most rescue groups will want the pet to live indoors with the family. For some this may mean using baby gates to keep the pet in or out of certain areas, crate training, removing poisonous plants or dangerous items from the pets reach, or any number of other preparations to make your home more pet friendly. You’ll also want to be sure your pet has his own sleeping place, and of course, plenty of toys to keep him busy.

Adopting a pet is a big commitment, but the benefits are huge, and so very much worth it! My dogs, Archie & Lydia, and my cat, Tequila, were all rescues and they have brightened my life more than I can put into words. They’re family that I dearly love, and I simply cannot imagine they were unwanted at one point. They’re certainly love and wanted here!

I wish you much love and happiness with the pet you may bring into your life soon…it can be one of the most wonderful and rewarding aspects of your life!
——————-
Well to make a long story short the woman is also a dog trainer. We talked for hours . She said she would be willing to train me my family and my pup for $35.00 a week. Essential Items to Bring Along For Your Dog While on Your Hiking Trips
by Kelly Marshall

If you're an outdoors kind of person, and a dog owner, you may have considered bringing your dog along with you on a hike this summer. Humans have been hiking and trailing the various landscapes of the Earth with dogs as companions and guides for thousands and thousands of years.
