Depending on whether your pet is a dog or cat, the type of breed determines what type of grooming is needed. For example, long-haired dogs may require more frequent and extensive grooming than short-haired canines.

Needless to say, all pets require some type of grooming on a regular basis. While cats may not need a bath more than once a month, dogs (particularly those who reside outdoors) may need a weekly bath.

When giving a dog or cat a bath, the first rule of thumb is never to use conventional soaps or shampoos. It is recommended that you purchase products specifically made for dogs or cats. While some breeds may love the water, others do not. Start out slowly during this process. Do not use any implements to wash the pet. Using your hands is preferable. Start from front to back and repeat when rinsing. Tip: Natural drying is preferred.

Note: Try not to get any of the soap or shampoo on a dog’s nose, or in their eyes; use plain water to wash their faces. Many beagle breeders feel that any kind of soap or shampoo can throw off the beagle’s scent.

Dental care is very important. It is recommended that you brush the pet’s teeth daily to prevent the build-up of plaque. Use pet toothpaste at all times.

Pets should be brushed regularly. For long-haired pets, it may be necessary to brush them daily. For short-haired pets, usually once a week will suffice. To prevent fleas you may also wish to alternate between a regular brush and a flea brush, which can be purchased at your local pet store.

One of the most difficult grooming tasks is trimming the nails of your pet. If you have never done this before, you may want to visit a pet grooming center so they can offer the full treatment. However, if you wish to do it on your own it is advised that you just trim the edge of the nail. If you cut the nails too short, bleeding can occur. There are nail trimmers for pets that can be purchased at your pet supply store.

It is also important to check your pet’s ears. Their ears should be pink in color, and the outer portion of the ear can be cleaned with a cotton ball. If you notice brownish colored mucus seeping from the ear or the pet is scratching the ear area, the cause could be mites. If so, take your pet to the vet.

Check your pet’s eyes to ensure there is no infection. Conjunctivitis is a common occurrence.

Check for any lumps or bumps under your pet’s coat. Pay special attention to any red spots or scars. This is an indication they may have developed an infection or have been infested with fleas or ticks.

Grooming your pet is not only beneficial to his health, but is an enjoyable experience for him as well.

Many people associate German Shepherd Dogs with being aggressive watchdogs, but this behavior is the result of training. A German Shepherd Dog will always be protective of his family and will always be wary of strangers, but they are not aggressive by nature.

For me German Shepherds are defined by beauty and soundness of mind and body all come together. Don’t leave the purchase of your German Shepherd to chance. German Shepherds also are prone to pancreas deficiency, which is where the pancreas stops creating enzymes and the animal is unable to pass any faeces. There is medication available, but it is not 100% effective. and also expensive, so be sure you have a proper pet medical insurance.

German Shepherds are double-coated with a coarse, water-resistent outer coat and a heavy, woolly undercoat. They are heavy shedders, especially in spring, and require regular combing. In the former East Germany , German Shepherds adhered more closely to the old prewar standard, marked by a straighter back, a longer and denser coat, and a darker color.

These dogs are now praised for their working ability. Since many German Shepherds have sensitive stomachs, it may be wise to phase in the new diet by mixing it with their existing food until they have adapted. Start by mixing the diet with their existing food in equal amounts. A typical German Shepherd’s body is slightly longer than tall is sturdy but lean. It has a slightly convex forehead, long muzzle, pointed ears and almond-shaped eyes that are set (as opposed to protruding) with an amiable expression. The coloring of the German Shepherd Dog can vary and includes black and tan, sable, and black. The German Shepherd Dog weighs in at 60-80 pounds for females, and 75-100 pounds for males.

The German Shepherd is a herding dog, originally bred from sheep-tending stock in rural Germany. The founder of the breed was Cavalry Captain Max Von Stephanitz, who almost single handedly developed the breed through judicious inbreeding and line breeding, from 1899 to 1936. German shepherd dogs are fearless, eager and alert. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage. They are not “show dogs”, but they are the best because they are the the most unspoiled and uncommercialized, and the closest to the original German Shepherd Dog of old Germany. Those are the ones that created a great reputation.

This is the root of our German shepherd dog breeder program and for the love of the this magnificent breed. Secondary sex characteristics are strongly marked, and every animal gives a definite impression of masculinity or femininity, according to its sex. The correct proportions of height to length and corresponding length of the leg bones results in a ground-eating gait that is low to the ground and imparts an impression of effortless progression. With his head thrust forward and a slightly raised tail, a balanced and even trotter will have a topline that falls in moderate curves from the tip of the ears over the neck and level back through the tip of the tail.

The German Shepherd, these days, is used more as a guard dog. The GSD is also one of the most popular breeds in USA, and the UK. The German Shepherd has a scissor bite, where the upper incisors must meet the lower incisors in a scissor grip. Level bite, overshot and undershot teeth are faulty, as well as widely spaced teeth. Many of us grew up with Rin Tin Tin, or we saw German Shepherds in nightly news reports breaking up riots, or we saw them in neighbors’ backyards protecting children. But that only scratches the surface of one of the most fascinating and confusing breeds on earth. So take care of your German Shepherd, they always need love and a good healthly life. Love them and they will love you back, invest in them, and remember to give them every month frontline plus for dogs and have for them a proper pet health insurance. They deserve it !

Tube Feeding Puppy Neonates

I now have a whopping TWO tube feedings under my belt, and both have gone very well. I was a bit more coordinated in my second efforts (smoother) than in my first, but in both cases, the feedings went quickly and without incident.

For the first time all week, after being tube-fed Mr Black (our runt) went over two hours without fussing (after both tube feedings). Before, even after alone time on Elsie's full teat, he'd start fussing 10 minutes after nursing.

Now he's sleeping soundly, doing normal puppy grunts, twitching away as he should, dreaming, and seems comfy. Phew. It's about time (it's been a really long week), and it warms my puppy-grandmommy heart to see (I can't tell you how relieved I am knowing he's getting the proper nutrition he needs).

FYI, here's the equipment we used to tube feed our little guy (we may have to do the same for Mr. Red later today, but we won't make that decision until we see how our evening weight checks work out). It includes a #8 Fr (2.7 mm) feeding tube/urethral catheter (for veterinary use only), a monoject plunger of the size suited to this feeding tube size, and Esbilac Milk Replacer for puppies (I used the prepared liquid in a can, slightly warmed in the microwave):

I thankfully had these things on hand largely because of the counsel of my breeder friend in AZ (Momma Teese) and because of the information provided by this wonderful, wonderful resource written by Myra Savant-Harris, R.N.:

This book (Puppy Intensive Care: A Breeder's Guide to Care of Newborn Puppies) included a DVD that provided actual footage of Savant-Harris tube feeding one of her pups (step-by-step instruction). That coupled with the detailed instruction she provides in the book (along with Momma Teese's encouragement from AZ and our vet walking me through it on the phone) gave me enough confidence to try.

Savant-Harris also has one other book out, that's taken much of the fear out of whelping and helping newborn pups for me. It's called "Canine Reproduction and Whelping: a Dog Breeder' Guide" and it covers virtually everything you need to know from mating through whelping and aftercare of both dam and newborns. I've been referring to both resources throughout our experience with this litter.

And though I'd read a lot before referencing this resources (I've read or referenced over twenty books and countless articles on the subject), I've learned so much more from these two books, especially about helping a pup in trouble.

You've got to understand, I am not a medical professional in any capacity. I've never even seen a feeding tube or catheter (an experience I was graciously spared with my own labor and deliveries). The thought of pushing this rubber tube down my canine grandbaby's throat completely intimidated and terrified me (I was so sure I was going to hurt the pup).

When it became apparent that we either tube feed Mr. Black or watch him die, the choice was made for us. I had to at least try.

Having done it now (twice), I realize that my fears were overblown, BUT the only reason I could attempt the procedure in the first place was because I had good solid resources, mentoring, and encouragement. I could never have done this on my own.

Our experience with this litter continues to remind me of how much I need people, how I'm not meant to be a rock or an island (as Paul Simon once glorified in song), and how okay it is for me to ask for help.

I guess we really are in this together (whether it's raising Labs or living life). It's the human (and canine) condition. And truth be told, I prefer it this way.

Self-sufficiency is a lonely world in which I never want to live again.

Thursday morning in a hospital parking lot, someone keyed my new car. both sides from wheel to wheel.
$3500 to get it fixed.

I'd love to know the reasoning behind that. I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation as to why someone would do that, I just wish they'd share it with me.

I went to the security guy whom I get on with quite well, (dog breeder) and looked at 4 different security camera views. my car was *just* off frame on all 4 cameras.

Company insurance won't pay. But the director of the hospital was so disgusted that this should happen on his property, he's going to see what he can work out. I'll be working on his pet project until December, and I see him all the time for (pointless) meetings so it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

The Professional Dog Breeders Advisory Council, along with Carl Gilgore, announced today the filing of a federal civil action against Dennis Wolff, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture; Susan West, director of the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement at the Department of Agriculture; and Kristin Donmoyer, a Pennsylvania Dog Law Officer.

The federal civil suit alleges that since 2006, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, through the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement, systematically targeted and unfairly treated commercial dog kennel operations, particularly in Lancaster County, PA. The suit outlines a pattern of abuse by officials from the Department of Agriculture, and alleges violations of the First and Fourteenth Amendments of the United States Constitution.

"Unfortunately there are times when the courts must intervene to stop the abuse of the executive branch of government," said Bob Yarnall, president of the American Canine Association. "Since 2006, the Governor has directed the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to target commercial kennel operators and to find reasons to shut legitimate businesses down. While there are rightful interests in enforcing regulations and the Pennsylvania Dog Law, creating SWAT teams of dog wardens and ignoring the deficiencies in kennel operations other than commercial kennels is fundamentally unfair and patently discriminatory."

The federal civil action sets forth several explicit examples of abuse by the Department of Agriculture, including the issuing of citations for infractions of dog breeding regulations and the Pennsylvania Dog Law. Based on the Department's annual report to the General Assembly, in the year 2007, kennel operators in Lancaster County were more than three times more likely to be inspected, more than 10 times more likely to be cited for violations and over 100 times more likely to receive a warning.

Further evidencing the disparity is the fact that similarly situated counties, such as Lancaster County and Allegheny County, whose kennels housed 85,000 dogs and 82,700 dogs respectively, received significantly different treatment from the Department of Agriculture. From January 1, 2006, to May 31, 2008, 76 kennel condition citations were issued to Lancaster County kennels; zero citations to Allegheny County kennels. Similarly, Bucks County kennels and Montgomery County kennel operators also received zero citations during the same period, despite housing over 40,000 dogs each.

"There is an undeniable pattern of abuse by the Department of Agriculture in enforcing regulations and the law that is intended to protect all dogs -- not just dogs in one part of the state," said Yarnall. "By treating similarly situated individuals differently, targeting kennels to drive them out of business, and unequally applying the law to certain kennels, the Department has violated the equal protections and due process clause of the United States Constitution."

The federal suit also raises questions concerning the conduct of the State Dog Law Officers, namely Kristin Donmoyer. The filing alleges that in late 2007 Ms. Donmoyer accosted Carl Gilgore, a volunteer at a commercial kennel, during a kennel inspection. Recoginiz9ing the disparate treatment that commercial kennels receive during the inspection process, Mr. Gilgore attempted to videotape the inspection being made by Ms. Donmoyer. At that time, he was threatened with arrest, in violation of Mr. Gilgore's enumerated rights under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

The lawsuit seeks to have the federal courts declare the actions of the Department unconstitutional, as they represent a violation of their federal rights, award $1 in nominal damages for Ms. Donmoyer's unconstitutional threat of arrest, allow breeding kennel owners to videotape inspections of their property, and require that similar standards for inspection be applied to all other kennels, consistent with applicable regulations.

"The Association takes this necessary action in order to provide for the uniform application of the law, to preserve the rights of our embers, and to invite the Department of Agriculture to work with us to promote the best breeding operations in the nation -- based on a collaborative effort, instead of a punitive one," said Yarnall. "We have and will continue to support appropriate changes that will improve kennel conditions."

If you browse through the free dog sales advertising websites you will notice that there are hundreds of puppies for sale every day. Many of these offers are made by professional breeders who have a reputation for being extremely passionate about what it is they do. On the other hand, most of these puppies for sale that are out there are being offered by people that decided to breed their dogs, but lack the experience needed to make dog breeding a lifelong endeavor.

If you are one of these people who do not take great interest in dog breeding for living, yet are considering breeding your dogs in order to make a few extra dollars and maybe even keep a puppy or two, it would behoove of you to read the following cons when it comes to dog breeding:

1. Professional dog breeders know the importance of sacrificing their time so that the puppies are born as healthy and strong as possible. This amount time can take hours and hours of devotion each and every day. You may want to reconsider dog breeding if you are not prepared to give up a large chunk of your freedom.

The largest part of your time will be spent on advertising and handling phone calls and inquiries from interested buyers. Men and women who are interested in the types of puppies you have available will have all sorts of questions and you must be ready to answer these questions at any given time. 95% of those who contact you with interest in your puppies will just ask questions or come by and look at the dogs, but will not end up buying one. Some new dog breeders do not have the patience for dealing with people like this.

2. Dog breeding also requires a great interest and knowledge about genetics, as well as knowing what steps to take to prevent genetic diseases. The process of dog pregnancy and how to assist with the whelping phase is one that you must be prepared for.

Dog breeding is a lot more than just putting a male and female together in hopes that they mate. You must be aware of the different ways to prevent health problems and educate yourself on the proper nutritional needs of the new puppies as well as the pregnant mother's food needs throughout the pregnancy.
