What should we do?

Hello everyone,

Sorry this is a bit lengthy, but I really need your help and advice. I am the father of two, 6yr and 9yr old boy and girl. My wife and kiddos really want a dog. I finally gave in and we, as a family, have been looking for weeks. Well we found a 6 month old black lab male puppy at a local animal shelter this past weekend. We took him out of his kennel, played with him a bit and found that he seemed really sweet. He took to my son quickly, allowed us to pet him, get our face into his face, played with a chew toy etc. No signs of any problems at all.

We decided to take him home and filled out the application. The shelter was supposed to have him neutered and call us by tomorrow to pick him up. In the meantime, we decided to name him "Bingo" and spent $300. on "puppy bling" (bed, crate, food, bowls, collar, leash, tag...etc) The shelter staff called us today and said there was an incident where they were trying to take another dog out of the same Kennel as Bingo and Bingo - Quote - "Tried to bite both kennel staff." The staff member said that he "Almost broke the skin" and seemed aggressive. The staff recommended that we not adopt him, however, said if we decide to, we must sign a waiver.

What do we do? I am suspicious of the staff, being that the dog "Tried to bite them" and "Almost broke the skin." etc. Doesn't sound like a vicious dog to me.....just a puppy. He seemed really sweet to us. But, I do have to think of my kids. What if he does turn vicious and bites my babies? What do you all think I should do; save this boy from certain death and adopt him anyway, or abort the whole thing.

Thanks!
Dan

Calvin is now 12 weeks and doing well, aside from his new skill of snarling he is great!! I have found some great resources to help us with that. :brow: He can already sit and lay down, so we anticipate that puppy training will go well. I do hope to post more pcitures soon but he keeps us busy!! We love him to death and my son does not leave his side, a great companion!! I look forward to speaking with you all during the issues we have ahead!! :D

We are not breeders, and have no intention of being. No judgement against breeding, I just don't want to. This just seemed the best place for our questions.
We foster for a rescue group, and currently have five puppies, one litter of four 6-week-olds and one 9-week-old. The litter was rescued at two weeks old and hand fed by a volunteer until they were on solid food. Here's my questions:
1. At what age should we consider them available for adoption? We have adopters ready for the 9-week-old and one 6-week-old. However, none have had their boosters yet, and only the older puppy has had his first round of shots. We were thinking after 8 weeks (and full shots) for the younger puppies, but the adopter wants to pick her up after first round and accept responsibility for second round since she's been weaned. We're not going for it, but I wanted to get your advice.
2. Any tips for potty training five at once?
3. When are they old enough to begin crate training? Do you crate together or separately?
We've never had this many at once - usually just one puppy at a time and older puppies. The litter was a special circumstance, and we took the older since we had the others. I want to make sure these little guys - and girls - have the best start possible.

He is skinny. I've *always* thought he was skinny but no one else did. Now everyone is commenting. :tapfoot: He has only gained 11lbs in 10 weeks and the last 3 weeks he's gained nothing. He acts fine, except lazy, but he's always been. *shrugs* I got fed up and had my dad do a full blood panel on him, I wanna be sure he's okay. I get the results back tomorrow, and I'm nervous.
Acral Lick Granuloma - A Problem For Many Dogs
by Joseph M. Sabol

Dogs often develop hot spots where they lick and chew constantly. A hot spot like this on the front paw near the wrist or the outside rear leg can turn into an Acral (relating to limbs ) Lick Granuloma. The spot becomes red, irritated and an open sore. The licking and chewing becomes a compulsive behavior. We are mere mortals though and it seems like we spend all our time focusing on our failings instead of celebrating the good that we do.

So I wanted to share with you an email we received today from Donna. She sent it after we approved a pre-certification for bilateral elbow dysplasia surgery that Huck, her Bull Mastiff puppy, is going to have before Christmas.

Huck's estimated surgical bill is $5,900 and if the actual vet bills comes out the same as the estimate, we'll be paying just over $4,100 (Donna has a $500 annual deductible, 20% copay and no take-home drug coverage - annual premium $349.06.)

When Donna heard this good news this afternoon, she sent us this email:

Dear Christine and everyone at Embrace,

Spread the word? I will SHOUT it from the roof tops!!!! Embrace has saved Huck and I. As a reasonably intelligent person, I did all my homework and thought I was doing my very best to purchase a great healthy puppy. Then real life happens, as it does with humans and here we are, in this terrible economy, with this very expensive problem.

My decision to purchase Embrace is the one of the wisest decisions I have made in my 52 years. You bet I will spread the word, and I know so many dog people who are as crazy in love with their dogs as I am Huck. Bless you all for this terrific news! You have saved my beloved pet as well as my 29 year marriage:) To see Huck pain free and happy and healthy will be our Christmas miracle. He is a wonderful, sweet soul, and he deserves to feel good. I cannot thank you all at Embrace Pet Insurance enough.

Very gratefully yours, Donna C & Huck the Mastiff

Dog training supplies are available in your local supermarket and pet shops. Always choose dog training supply items that are humane and look safe, anything that restricts your dogs breathing or movement is not a good option for training.

Dog training supply stores sell everything for anti bark collars to dog appeasing pheromones! There is always something for every dog at one of these stores and many come highly recommended. If you can’t find anything in your local store the internet offers a vast range of dog training products and will ship to anywhere.

Dog appeasing pheromones are new on the market, they help your dog relax a little which is great because in todays world there are lots of disturbing noises and smells out there and with a dogs senses a lot more sensitive than ours they need that extra bit of comfort. There are three different ways to use dog appeasing pheromones and your local dog training supply store should have them. The three ways are a dog appeasing pheromones diffuser, which works by plugging it into a socket and letting it scent the room like an air freshener. The natural pheromones released will help soothe your dog especially when it comes to things like fireworks noises. Most dogs hate them and get anxious around them, and the diffuser will help them to stay relaxed. The pheromones also come in a spray which works the same way as the diffuser, the only difference is that you spray the area they will be entering about ten minutes before the enter and the effects should last around one hour to one and a half hours.

Your local dog training supply shop should have a lot of different products for you to try and take home with you, training your dog is serious business and the more help you can get the better. Always take dog training products seriously! They wouldnt be out there if they didnt work.

Before trying out a product always read the instructions thoroughly before hand and do not attempt to use the product if you think it will hurt your dog in any way. Learning is supposed to fun, for both you and your dog. So make it good by purchasing a few good toys along with your dog training supplies!

Detecting Dog Bloat
by Ben Anton

Canine gastric dilatation, commonly referred to as bloat, is a fairly common and potentially fatal medical condition. Bloat occurs when gas accumulates in the dog's stomach and causes it to become overstretched. Bloat can also involve a twisting of the dog's stomach, known as volvulus, which leads to very high mortality rates. Volvulus has the

Dog Food: 5 Extraordinary Types of Commercial Dog Food You Might Want to Consider

Dog Training

Dog Food: 5 Extraordinary Types of Commercial Dog Food You Might Want to Consider
by Kelly Marshall

A few short years ago, feeding your dog was so much easier as compared to today's nutritional advice. I remember when my father's dog ate whatever the whole family would eat, including apple cobbler! In addition to table scraps, he also enjoyed eating commercial dog food. Dog Mange: How to Keep Your Dog From Itching
by Cristian Stan

If your dog has mange, you will know it right away. For starters, it would scratch a lot and become irritated. Your pet would also develop red rashes on its skin that would soon spread all over, if you don't take it to the vet right away. Mange is a major problem in dogs. If you suspect that your dog is suffering from

Dog Parvo - The Deadliest Viral Disease of Dogs

The dog parvo virus is probably the most common viral illness of dogs at the moment The virus is extremely small (the Latin word for small is "parvo") - just a few grams of stool can contain millions of virus particles The dog parvo virus has been known and identifiable since the late 70's and can be transmitted by direct or indirect contact with vomit or diarrhea from an infected dog...

Dog trainer files lawsuit after being bit (North Platte Bulletin)

A North Platte dog trainer is seeking $11,857.90 in medical bills after a two-year-old Rottweiler bit her in the face. It's difficult to imagine where those weeks have gone: on one hand, seeming to take forever; on the other, just flying by.

Here's what the young pupmeisters are up to these days:

They're still nursing, but not nearly as frequently, nor as long. The pups are far more efficient, and Elsie's milk lets down stronger and faster now so it goes quickly (all of about two minutes). And, of course, Elsie is getting less amenable to the idea of the pups nursing now that they all have TEETH! The poor sweet Elsie girl...I think she's ready to be done with this:

If you read this week's posts, you know we've started them on gruel: a mixture of soaked-in-boiling-water-first-then-blended-puppy-food mixed with Esbilac (puppy milk replacement formula) cooled to just moderately warm (like the temperature of milk in a baby bottle). They absolutely love it and are quite ready for it. We'll gradually increase the consistency over the next ten until the pups get to point where they're handling dry puppy food (what we'll send them to their new homes on).

The pups are learning to lap from a water bowl (here are Mstrs. Green, Red, and Yellow trying it out below). After a few snout fulls (for the braver, jump-right-in types), they get the idea. The more cautious pups seem to lap without any snout-fulls at all (hmmm....is there a lesson in there somewhere?):

They're fine-tuning their vocalizations: figuring out what each means, trying each out in a more controlled way. Here's Mr. Red trying out the forlorn howl:

They're beginning to use a puppy litter box (yes, they make these especially for canines and puppy potty training now). This is our first time trying it, and it seems to be working well. They pups use it about half the time (without our actively training them to do so). Even if they only use it half the time, that's half the clean up for me and well worth the small expense (saves a TON on paper expense and laundry, too). Here are Mr. Red (foreground in box) and Mr. Green (behind Mr. Red) trying to use it simultaneously:

They still like to hide. I think it provides a sense of security for them. In the following three pictures, Miss Pink sleeps soundly underneath the lip of the litter box, Mr. Blue rests under the rails in the back of the whelping box, and Miss Sky slumbers along the whelping box side under the rail (like Mr. Blue):

They seem to enjoy the feeling of being boxed in (or at least having something over their heads). That bodes well for their crate training to come! :o)

And they still nap most of the time, of course. The following pictures are of Mr. White, who plopped down next to the water dispenser, and Mr. Lime, who plopped down on top of the pyramid toy, sleeping soundly about 30 seconds after they put their heads down. When these guys plop for a nap, they plop for a nap!

The pups continue to wrestle with and chew on each other, but it's not really in earnest yet (just wait!), nor is it well coordinated (they're still developing, after all). We'll start adding more people who Elsie already knows but come less frequently over the next week to ten days. Then the new owners will be able to come visit the pups reqularly during the pups' last two weeks here.

Here's Mr. White pawing at and climbing on BFF Kath as she sits in the puppy play pen (yes, in addition to handling them, puppy socialization at this stage means getting on the floor and allowing the pups to climb all over you -- such hard work, I tell ya!):

Each pup, including Mr. Black, is developing right on schedule. At 28 days old now, they've just completed their first "awareness/identification" stage of development and now move into their second "awareness/identification" week.

This week we can expect to see more sophisticate play (less throwing themselves at and tripping over each other, and more controlled romping). We should also see more chasing (yup, we've actually seen a trot or two out of the more developed pups already!), dominance play, and "kill" games where they pin each other by the neck (this is all part of them identifying where they fall in the pecking order).

We'll be adding climbing toys, more movement toys (rolling balls), and more new surfaces for them to walk on. We'll also be taking them outdoors on the grass and decking later in the week.

For the first time in they're young lives, they'll also start spending short amounts of time 1:1 with us away from the litter. That's when we can really begin to see their personalities. We'll gradually increase the time away with each pup so that they learn independence and so that we can minimize (hopefully) their separation anxiety and increase their human bonding when the time comes for the puppies to go to their new homes.

Betcha never knew so much went into the proper socialization of a pup (most people don't, and then they wonder why they end up with a "problem" puppy)! I know I sure didn't before we started breeding, but the more we do now to prepare the pups for their lives with their new owners, the more likely it is that they'll find forever happy homes.

And that's the goal, isn't it? We raise them to fly, to reach their potentials, and to enrich the lives of those they love (and who love them).

Sounds a bit like human children, too, eh?

'Til next time,
Joan

Great Dane gives birth to great litter: 16 puppies

FRUITVALE, Colo. Dog difficulty urinating? If so, your dog could have a urinary tract infection (UTI) or bladder stones. Since these conditions can be as painful in animals as they are in humans, you'll want to get your pet to the vet. Before you do, read this article and learn what other signs to look for, what to

Inquiry after dead dog discovery

The discovery of a dead dog, along with a maltreated one, at Aberdeen beach is investigated.

Is Your Dog Urinating Frequently? Here's What to Do
by Laura Ramirez

If your dog is urinating frequently, you are right to be concerned. As a caring pet owner, you know that elimination habits are a good barometer of your pet's health. In this article, you'll learn what signs to look for and what to do when you see a change in your pet's routine. If you notice your dog

Karaoke Dangerous To Your Dog’s Health

While technology is great, according to a new survey in Britain it can be dangerous to our pets health. The survey was done by Petplan using 3,000 animal owners.

It found that a number of pet owners are unwilling to take responsibility for an accident, saying the animal was the cause. Over a third blamed the pet for eating something it shouldn’t have, another third blamed their animals for getting hurt while jumping off furniture.

A number of strange incidents were revealed through the survey. There was a cat who singed her whiskers when sniffing a candle and a dog who swallowed a pair of knickers.

The survey also included owners of guinea pigs, rabbits, reptiles, birds and cats. All of whom are potentially at risk from 21st century toys.

Top 10 Gadgets Most Likely To Injure Pets

1. iPod (15 per cent)

2. Laptop (10.8 per cent)

3. Remote Control (10.8 per cent)

4. Plasma TV (10.8 per cent)

5. Wii (10 per cent)

6. DVD Player (10 per cent)

7. Playstation (8.3 per cent)

8. Nintendo DS (5.8 per cent)

9. Mobile Phone (5.8 per cent)

10. Karaoke Machine (5.8 per cent)

Interesting, but the article doesn’t say exactly how these items caused injury. It does make one wonder how a pet is injured by a karaoke machine, maybe the owner’s singing was the cause.

Here’s the setup:

A great golden retriever puppy that is 14 weeks old.
A very cool client family with 2 kids which are fantastic and work a lot with the puppy.
A lot of hard work done over the last three weeks training with the puppy.

So, after the lesson today the Mrs. says “hey, we need to pay you for the lessons, let me get the checkbook” and walks inside the house. When she comes back outside Stella (the puppy) runs over to her on the front porch and waits while she writes the check. After she finishes signing everything she rips the check out, hands it to the puppy and yells at me to call Stella over. One quick “Here” command and Stella flashes across the yard to bring me the check! No chewing, no slobber, no running off with a multi-hundred dollar check, just straight to me in that wonderful Golden Retriever “I’m doing the right thing” way. Amazing.

Now, I ask you, is that a well trained puppy or not?

So, if I can have a wonderful ending to any Monday I think this would be it. A Golden puppy running across the yard bringing me a check. That makes today a VERY good day indeed.
