The word "tolling" means to lure or decoy, and Europeans have used a variety of dogs to toll ducks into nets since the 1600s. In order to lure the ducks, dogs will play along the shore by chasing sticks and disappearing into the grass. This activity brings curious ducks to the area, where the dog will continue with its antics, all the while ignoring the ducks. This gives hunters the opportunity to shoot the ducks, and the dog will retrieve them. It is believed that tolling dogs came to North America with European settlers. Experts believe that the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever came about in Yarmouth County located at the southern tip of Nova Scotia, during the early 1800s. It is thought that it may be the result of a red European decoy dog that was crossed with other spaniels, setters, or retriever dogs, or even some farm collies. Others believe that this breed descended from tolling American Indian dogs...... Find out more about this dog breed.
