History of the Norwich Terrier Breed

The Norwich Terrier is a relatively recent breed, emerging the latter half of the 19th century. Evidence suggests that at that time, near Cambridge, England, Irish and Yorkshire terriers were crossed to produce a small, red, and often black and tan, ratter, the Cantab Terrier. Later called the Trumpington Terrier, the breed was popularized by Cambridge University students, among whom it became a fad. The name Norwich Terrier is the legacy of one prodigious Trumpington named Rags. In 1900, Rags arrived at a stable near Norwich, where he quickly gained fame as both a ratter and a sire. His unflagging procreative energies earned him the title, "patriarch of the Norwich breed." One of his many sons made the crossing to America in the company of a man named Jones, introducing the breed on that continent, where it is still occasionally referred to as the Jones Terrier. In America, as in England, the Norwich became a staple of fox-hunting forays, because its small size permitted it to enter burrows to flush foxes gone to ground. When the AKC officially recognized the breed in 1936, it had both prick-eared and drop-eared varieties. In 1964, the drop-eared dogs were separated into the Norfolk Terrier by the English, with the Americans following their lead in 1979. The Norwich Terrier has enjoyed much success in the show ring but is only moderately popular as a pet.

Size and Appearance of the Norwich Terrier Breed

Among the smallest of working terriers, the Norwich is stocky and square-built. Its sturdy body has strong-boned legs that give it tremendous propulsion. It has large, solid teeth in a fox-like muzzle. Whiskers and eyebrows stand out on the otherwise short-haired face. The eyes are dark and expressive; the ears are upright. The tail is docked by half but should be long enough to grip for pulling the dog out of a hole. The outer coat is wiry and straight, lying close to the body over a definite undercoat. Colors are red, wheaten, tan, black and tan, and grizzle. Occasional white markings are undesirable.

Norwich Terrier Temperament

The nature of this little hunting dog is spunky and lovable. It is courageous, loyal and affectionate. The Norwich is easy to train, if given consistent rules, but is sometimes difficult to housebreak. If left alone outside for long periods, it will dig and bark. It's best that their quick minds be occupied. They love toys and balls and to know all that's going on. They are good with children and other dogs but must be taught to enjoy cats.

Norwich Terrier Recommended Maintenance

Twice-weekly brushing of the wiry coat is a minimum. Professional stripping of dead hairs at least twice-yearly is encouraged. They are light shedders and require little clipping. An active dog, the Norwich fares best with daily exercise in the form of a good walk, a short run or a lively play session. It loves to explore but should be let off the lead only in secure areas. A house with a yard is an ideal setting for the Norwich, although it is a good apartment dog if sufficiently exercised.
