History of the Lagotto Romagnolo Breed

An ancient breed, the Lagotto Romagnolo was known for its ability to retrieve in the water and for its adeptness at searching out truffles in the ground. It is believed to have descended from Italy in the 16th century, specifically in the lowlands of Comacchio and the marshlands of Ravenna. According to history, the marshlands were drained over the centuries, and the land was made arable. It is said that this breed has been used for truffle hunting in the open land of Romagna since the 19th century because of its highly-developed sense of smell, as well as its ability to concentrate.

Size and Appearance of the Lagotto Romagnolo Breed

A small- to medium-size breed, the Lagotto is well-proportioned with a square build and strong muscles. The large head is supported by powerful neck, and the teeth usually meet in a scissors bite. The triangular ears are rounded at the tip. The round eyes come in a variety of colors ranging from dark yellow to dark brown. The wooly, dense coat is quite curly and also comes in several colors, including solid white, solid rust, off-white, shades of brown, and white with rust or brown patches, This dense coat helps to protect the dog from thorns and other dangers while it searches for truffles.

Lagotto Romagnolo Temperament

A working dog with a natural talent for searching, the Lagotto has very good nose. It is an affectionate and loyal breed that often becomes quite attached to its family. It is generally easy to train, and it gets along well with other animals including dogs. Socialization with other pets is recommended. It is also a good watchdog and will alert its family to anything out of the ordinary. This is an intelligent dog that needs a lot of exercise as well as a job to do.

Lagotto Romagnolo Recommended Maintenance

Even though this breed sheds little hair, the dense, curly coat does need to be groomed regularly. This dog is considered to be ideal for those with allergies. Due to its size, this breed can live happily in an apartment as long as proper daily exercise is provided. It does best with 3 to 4 short walks a day. Be sure to fence in any flower gardens in the yard, as the Lagotto is known for digging. This breed also enjoys swimming.
