History of the Coton de Tulear Breed
Believed to be related to the French Bichon and the Italian Bolognese, the Coton de Tulear is thought to have been brought to Madagascar by French troops. But this breed was not well known until the past twenty years when it was reintroduced to the United States and Europe. Research suggests that the Coton de Tulear was a companion dog owned by the wealthy people of Tulear, a city located in southern Madagascar. While this breed is still considered to be quite rare, it has been popular with the wealthier residents of Madagascar and has also gained popularity in America as of late.
Size and Appearance of the Coton de Tulear Breed
The cotton-like coat of this breed is indicative of its name, as "Coton" is French for "cotton." The top coat is long, and the coat comes in black or white, although white is the preferred choice of breeders. This is a rather small breed which is lightly muscled. It averages about 10-12 inches in height and rarely gets much heavier than 15 pounds.
Coton de Tulear Temperament
Friendly and affectionate, the Coton de Tulear is a social dog that enjoys the company of children as well as other pets. It is devoted and very attached to its own family. Its alert tendencies make it a good watch dog, but its friendliness and size make it a poor guard dog. The Coton de Tulear is a playful breed that enjoys being the center of attention. In fact, it has been known to walk on its hind legs in order to entertain the family. It is quick to learn, but some may show a streak of stubbornness.
Coton de Tulear Recommended Maintenance
Careful grooming is essential for the Coton de Tulear. The coat consists of long, light-textured hair that needs to be combed out on a daily basis in order to remove dead hair. The hair that grows between the toes and pads should be trimmed on a regular basis, and the hair inside the ears should also be cut short. Bathing is only recommended a couple of times a year. This breed does not really shed very much, so it may be a good choice for those suffering from allergies. The Coton de Tulear will do well in an apartment, as this dog is quite active when inside and it doesn't really need a yard. This breed will enjoy long walks and games of fetch. Most also enjoy swimming.
