History of the Azawakh Breed

By most accounts, it is believed that the Azawakh breed came from the Sahel region of Africa, and it was bred by Tuareg nomads in countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. It is thought that the dog was used in guarding and hunting capacities, as well as for companionship. This breed is exceptionally good at hunting hare and gazelle, because it can run at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. It is said that the Azawakh protects its family in places like Mali by sleeping on the roof of the home, keeping watch for predators such as hyenas. If a predator approaches, the dogs in the area create a pack that effectively chases it away or even kills it. While it is not registered by the AKC or CKS, this breed was recognized in 1993 by the UKC. It is recorded in the AKC's Foundation Stock Service. It is rare to find the Azawakh in North America and Europe, but it is slowly gaining some popularity.

Size and Appearance of the Azawakh Breed

Considered to be a regal-looking and elegant dog, the Azawakh is taller than it is long. It is a lean breed with fine bones and muscles. The back is short and flat, while the legs are long and lean. The head features a long muzzle, pendant ears, and dark, almond-shaped eyes. The eyes offer an expression of intelligence and loyalty. The skin fits tightly around the frame of the breed, and the coat is short and fine. This breed comes in a variety of coat colors including light sable to dark fawn. Some have a black mask or a white blaze. Usually there is white tipping at the end of the tail and a white bib on the chest. Many times each leg features a white marking as well. The gait of the Azawakh is described as being light and supple.

Azawakh Temperament

Alert and attentive, the Azawakh can be affectionate and gentle with family members, but it is reserved - and can be aggressive - with strangers. It is an independent and territorial breed and makes a loyal guardian and companion. Even with socialization from a young age, this breed may still be suspicious of visitors and strangers. There is not much documentation regarding the temperament of this dog with other family pets or children, as it is considered to be a rare breed in North America.

Azawakh Recommended Maintenance

Minimal grooming is required for the smooth, short coat of the Azawakh. A weekly brushing or combing with a firm bristle brush will suffice, and bathe with dry shampoo only when it's necessary. This breed is considered to be an average shedder. Note that this breed is sensitive to the cold, but it will be fine if a coat is provided in colder climates. It is important to provide this breed with daily exercise, including the chance to run off the leash. It will enjoy taking long daily walks, and experts suggest that this is done around the same time every day. The Azawakh will do fine in an apartment dwelling as long as enough daily exercise is provided.
