Everybody agrees that there is a problem but no one wants to be the one to actually do something to alleviate the problem or get involved. On Monday, a resident of a trailer court was evicted from his home and his effects put into storage. There were two five month old male black lab pups in his yard. The landlord called the Houston dog pound to pick up the pups as they were now strays - no home. The pound refused to pick them up as they were not wandering the streets. The landlord, frustrated called the SPCA and was told that since the pups were not in critical distress, there was nothing they could do. They called Turtle Gardens and although full I agreed to accept the pups if they could bring them to me as I was alone. They were afraid the dogs would get sick in their truck and they had no canopy on their truck for the pups to travel in. They then called the provincial constable of the SPCA; Lyle Kennedy who was sympathetic but could do nothing as it was not a critical distress case. The SPCA would not pay his mileage to deliver the pups to a shelter as there is no SPCA shelter in this area. He then called me to see if I would accept the pups. For the puppies’ sake I agreed to take them in without any funding. He then asked the RCMP if they would bring me the pups on their next tour. They agreed and half an hour later I received a call from dispatch saying they were on their way. Thank you for helping us help them.
As soon as my husband arrived home, he took the two pups to our veterinarians to be vaccinated and checked over. They are in very good condition so somebody must have been feeding them. They were placed in the quarantine pen and given food and water. Their new names are Trailer and Park. They are available for adoption and are beautiful black lab pups.
Turtle Gardens is not a government funded shelter nor are we affiliated with the SPCA. Turtle Gardens is a private no - kill Society with charitable status funded by donations, adoption fees and surrender fees. We are the only shelter for domestic animals from Fort Fraser to the Hazeltons but we can’t save all the unwanted pets. We are only one but because we are one we do the best we can with what we have. Trailer and Park have a safe haven but what about the next sad story?
