Dog Health : smelly discharge

I have a 9 year old female who has been spayed. She has started having a very smelly discharge from her vaginal area. When she puts her tail down it gets on her tail. When I try to lift her tail up to check her she won't let me. I did try and wipe her off with a baby wipe and she didn't like it at all. What could be causing this?

Our vet is out of town this weekend. Is there anything I can do in the meantime?
