Dog Health : Urinary Incontinence

In the 10 months that we've had Sofie, I've posted numerous times about her UTI issues and "leaky urine". She has had about 7 UTIs since we've had her and the sign was always that she'd be sleeping and leak some urine out. So I'd collect the sample, bring it in, and sure enough - antibiotics. Since the last round which was a few months ago now, we've given 500 mg Cranberry capsules two times a day so 1000mg a day. This was just to help keep the urine more acidic and try to keep the UTIs from returning.

There was no leaky urine for about 2 months now. This week, almost every night she has had a wet bed. So I brought a sample in today and SURPRISE - everything is perfect. He said there were no crystals, no blood, it looked liked 100% healthy urine. GREAT! But why is she leaking urine? So he said she may have a weak bladder or urinary incontinence. He mentioned that this might have been the big problem all alone and that the UTIs were secondary and it was coincidence that we found those.

He suggested estrogen supplements that she'd need to be on forever now. The first 2 weeks is every day, then after that it is once a week. Has anyone else gone through this? It seems drastic to commit to a medication that she'll need forever, and is this an expensive drug? This shouldn't be my biggest concern but money is definitely an issue. Also, I've done some research online tonight and the estrogen supplements seem to be something that's given for spay incontinence. She's had this since we first brought her home, way before she was spayed. And it's actually been less frequent since spaying her... any thoughts? any ideas? I love my vet and I absolutely trust them but I guess I just don't fully understand this.

Thanks in advance!
